What's on Your Playlist?

One of the things I’ve been on the lookout for is guest writers/contributors. So when I heard a powerful message by Abraham, a teenager in my church RCCG DSP, I just had to share it with you all. I hope it blesses you as much as it did me.

Music is powerful!

Some of you may realize this, some of you may not, but music is powerful! It can change your mood, stir your emotions, shape how you see yourself, other people, and God. Now, here’s the deeper truth: Music is spiritual and this is something the devil understands better than most of us.

In today’s world, most of the songs out there glorify things that are completely against God‘s word. Only God knows how many songs there are about money, living without purpose, or sleeping with as many people as possible, or having relationships without commitment. In some of these songs, the lyrics might not be explicit but they still remove our focus away from God. That’s why the bible warns us to guard our hearts and not conform to the things of this world (Prov. 4:23 and Rom. 12:2). Now obviously, you can’t guard your heart or renew your mind while still pumping yourself full of messages and ideas that contradict everything Jesus taught. What goes in is what comes out (Luke 6:45).

You may ask yourself- what about songs that aren’t about God but promote love, kindness, resilience- are those songs in the clear? While these songs may promote good values and good things we should be careful. Paul warns us about this in 1 Corinthians 10:23 (NIV)- “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive”. Because even positive songs can present a world view without God. They may inspire you but not transform you. They may sound good, but don’t build your spirit. If a song motivates you to believe in yourself more than in what God wants for you, or tells you that love or success is the highest goal in life but leaves Jesus out completely, it is still off target.

You need to be discerning about the songs you listen to. You can't live a God-first life on a God-optional playlist! Let's not settle for music that just sounds good, let's crave music that feeds our soul, strengthens our walk with God, and reminds us of who we are in Christ (Eph. 5:15-16). The best playlist is one that consistently pulls you closer to Jesus, not just to good feelings.

Don't settle for vibes when God is offering you victory!

I hope this message blesses you the way it blessed me. I also wrote a post on this topic a while back. You can read it here- Is Your Gospel Playlist Building You Up or Distracting You?

  1. This part of the message struck me - Because even positive songs can present a world view without God. They may inspire you but not transform you. GOD BLESS ABRAHAM!
